The schooling system has been here for a very long time, and there are a lot of people who contributed to the creation and improvement of the concept of school. The concept is dating all the way back to ancient Greece, a few hundred years B.C. Students would gather around a tutor and would listen to him speaking and teaching. These kinds of learning areas were called “Akademia” – today, the word “Academy” is derived from it.
The first concept of a school that is closest to the modern one as we know it is often attributed to Horace Mann, born in 1796.
A few hundred years, to this day, both technology, medicine, and other sciences evolved and improved, but the concept of schooling was more or less the same. Of course, it improved a lot, but the core concepts stayed – same ways of studying, the same homework and the way kids learn.
But in the modern age, where technology is rapidly moving forward, there is no excuse to let our education system be stuck in the past – it hurts everyone. Our goal as whole mankind is to improve and adapt to changes, and we should definitely change some things.
Many scientists already proved that young children learn the best by having experiences. The current school is making you sit at a desk for a very long time, and when you get home, you study for the coming up tests. With today’s technology, we can afford ourselves a change – there are many modern software, hardware, and similar inventions to help improve the way we look at the studying and learning as a whole, for example, virtual reality and augmented reality technologies. These aren’t even that new and unreachable, it’s becoming everyday stuff for many people all around the world.
What is virtual reality?
Virtual reality (VR) represents an experience in the form of an artificial environment and places generated by computers that you can experience in feel in the first person. You usually have headset and joysticks and when you move in the real world, the camera in the virtual environment moves the same way, giving you the feeling of reality.
This concept is widely used in the gaming industry, which it is known the best for. There are many virtual reality games developed today.
Most schools are looking at video games with disproval and this makes it even harder to adapt those concepts, but virtual reality could have many applications in different fields. For example, there can be developed historical locations in virtual reality where students learn history by being right there! Geography could be taught by showing real places in VR, like pyramids, Eiffel tower or the statue of liberty!
The number of applications is so vast that you can basically have any way to teach an interactive class where the students experience the material they’re studying!
And why not let those same students develop the virtual reality software for teaching, it would be a great way to teach a programming class while making something useful – a project with real-life applications. Young people are usually more creative than the elder ones, and they should maximize that creativity and use it for something useful.
Same as virtual reality, there is augmented reality. This means that the current, real world, is changed in some way or form using software – the example for this is the popular game viral Pokemon Go or apps like the one IKEA made – you choose the furniture on your smartphone, and when you focus the camera inside your room, you see how those furniture items would look inside your house.
The same concepts can be used for many different things, similar to VR. There already exists the idea that this can be used for teaching medicine – students can see on their glasses the statistics and data of patients, they can see what diseases they have and other things.
AR concept boomed with the creation of Google Glasses, but now there are many different hardware options. HoloLens is a great example of a headset that changes the reality around you. You can animate a hole in the ground that looks real or you could see an animal from a different side of the world inside your house – the possibilities are endless.
As soon as we start adopting these technological and scientifical concepts to improve our quality of life, we can advance as human species. Imagine the generations in the future and how their way of learning new things will look – in the far away future, we can only imagine.
